Scams targeting elderly Indians have become more sophisticated and more frequent. WhatsApp is the primary delivery mechanism — fake KYC links, digital arrest threats, lottery wins, and investment schemes arrive via the app your parents use most.

Best for: After a financial scam has occurred — reporting it to the RBI and initiating investigation. Also useful for checking whether a financial scheme is registered.

Limitation: A reporting tool, not a prevention tool. Useful after the fact.

6. Practical measures that don't require any app

These are underrated and often more effective than any tool:

• Family code word for financial requests. Establish a word that family members use when a financial request is genuine. If someone calls claiming to be your child needing urgent money and doesn't know the code word, it's a scam. This defeats the AI voice cloning attack entirely.
• The "hang up and call back" rule. Teach your parent: for any call creating urgency (arrest, account blocked, accident), hang up and call the relevant family member or institution back on a known number. Scammers can't survive this delay.
• OTP hygiene. No legitimate institution — bank, telecom, government — will ever ask for an OTP over the phone. This is the single most important rule to drill in.
